Resting on the south bank of the Thames over the millennium bridge from St. Paul’s cathedral, this cavernous ex power station often holds sublime contemporary art. This time, in 2016, I was a tad underwhelmed. The Rothko room is always lovely. The new extension has created almost too much space. The rumor is that rich people who own the adjacent apartments are complaining about art patron looking into their apartments.
The foyer can be windy and cold in inclement weather. Access is from the river side, below the Millennium Bridge, or from the West. There are good views of south London from various windows. Often you will find a room with just one or two “installations”. There are plenty of lifts, although they are often in demand.
