Aras GlencolumbkilleWe stay a few days at a humble and erratically run “budget” B&B, name of Aras Ghleann Cholm Cille (Summer of 2013). This is away down a narrow road skirting the western edge of Donegal, in the north-west of Ireland. It’s halfway between the wee town of Ghleann Cholm Cille (Glencolumbkille in …umm… English?) and the absolute end of the road at Malin Beg. Room is accessible, with a roll-in shower and reasonable space. Unseasonably chilly right now, say the locals. Squalls, mist and such abound. Tonight we’re for the pub and some local fiddlers. Other attractions include the Glencolmcille Folk Village Museum, standing stones, an Irish Language centre, etc. Tomorrow it’s to Sligo via Slieve League Cliffs, “the highest sea-cliffs in Europe”, or so some say. Three times higher than those legendary ones at Mohar, anyhow. We have been having a hard time of it with health and logistics this last week but the outrageous kindness and friendliness of the Irish, especially the women, has buoyed and sustained us. Ireland’s beauty, wild or tamed, has helped a bit, to be certain! Lots of love, Grant & Jill
