We stopped in Goult for dinner one night two years ago and left with a poor impression of the place, unjustified as it turned out. Driving back to Roussillon from another interesting hill town called Menerbes, we popped in at about 5:30 pm. It was another sunny warm day in Provence. We parked in the southern carpark, opposite the La Terasse Restaurant. We wandered up the road alongside La Terasse and found a fascinating old cemetery with a bent for topiary. Jill also found a peaceful bench with a nice view of the countryside. The restaurant smelled wonderful as we passed.

Later we headed up the hill past the lively Café de la Poste and up around the hill to the left along Rue du Four. The town is lovely, almost completely built with drystone walls. At the top of the hill is a windmill! Jill says the walls aren’t true drystone as they have some mortar, and that they are a poor effort (compared to her native English

ones). I guess French/English rivalry lives on, although she loves France and speaks the language well. The road down (Rue de Jeu de Paume) is very steep for a short way, but not cobbled. I made it down fine, tilted back comfortably.

At the Café de la Poste as we waited outside for a free table (inside is…humble) for an apéritif a wild thunderstorm struck. We found a table under an awning and drank Rosè and the storm dampened us. I ran to La Terasse and booked, which was a good move as the restaurant was fine.

Altogether a lovely town and we are glad to revise our opinion.
